“A Raisin in the Sun” Assignment #1

Posted by: Schrotenboer | May 28, 2008 |

Read the following poem, “Harlem” by Langston Hughes and interpret it:

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up

Like a raisin the in sun?

Or fester like a sore–

And then run?

Does it stink like rotten meat?

Or crust and sugar over–

Like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags

Like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

I think Hughes is trying to say how ideasand dreams come to us. Do they come all at once and the information basically bombards us, or does the information slowly seep in and settle gently. Does it come quickly and then stops for a while and then returns? Or does it appear for a brief moment and then dissapears forever. It gives us real-world examples of our hopes in food form.

Langston Hughes was talking about if you don’t do anything with your dreams, you dont do anything to pursue them, they are going to turn “bad”. hence the metaphore of a rasin in the sun, a wound, or a piece of meat. Hughes is asking; so are you going to let your dreams die or are you going to blow them up and make the dream a reality?

The poem is talking about what happens to dreams. Are they ever really fulfilled or are they usually crushed by some outlying force? He interprets how a dream is nurtured by using objects to help translate a dreams progress or change in a dream.

This poem can be summed up by one question “what happens to the dreams we do not pursue?” the poem is wondering what happens to dreams we throw away and deem unworthy to follow through with.

This play, or a least this scene fits very well to this poem. Walter has a dream that he will invest in the liquor business, but that breaks apart. Ruth also has a dream that she they will have their very own house with their own lawn where Travis can play on. This will not happen, well not so far. These events are both deffered and have a slim chance of happening based on their financial problems.

I think this poem reveals the outcome of a dream that has been “pushed” aside. The feelings that follow along with an abandoned dream may vary from person to person. “Does it dry up…”, meaning is it easily forgotten. “Or fester like a sore-”, expressing a continuous sense of pain knowing that you failed. “Maybe it just sags, Like a heavy load”, its always on your mind, slowing you down, because deep down you want it so bad. I believe this poem sends the message that you should never give up on your ambitions, never loose hope.

It asks what would happen when people put off what the want to do or their “dreams.”
It asks if the dream dies out or if it is left undone for a long time does it hurt the person or does it stay fresh in their mind.

It basically asks what happens to the “goal” when they are put off or pushed to the back of their lives.

I think this poem is saying that many different things can happen to a dream, it just depends on how hard you try to make your dream come true. If you don’t really try it will dry up like a raisin in the sun, but if you try your hardest your dream could come true.

“Harlem” is talking about what would happen to Your dreams if they were to be posponed, or delayed. Would You even care? Would You leave them undone like unfinished business, without a care in the World? Or would You remember those dreams You once had, and try to finish them? If You leave them sitting there they will dry up like a raisin lying in the sun, but if You follow through, Your dreams could grow into something great.

to me the to poem is about what happens to an idea in someones had after they have presented it to someone and then it is turn down. The poem is wonder if the idea then dissapears or dose it stay with the person until they can out grow it. does it bother them then forever. does it then become there own personal secret with them self that draws happyness in them but cant be known to any one else. Or then one day does it concume them so much that they have to come with them self even though they will regret teling anyone.

i think it says that if you put aside your dreams and hopes you will never remember them how they were and also how when you put aside something you love, you will never appreciate it how you once did.

i love this poem personally, i have read it before and i think it has a really strong message of not letting you forget your dreams. dreams are what keep you going, and you shouldn’t go astray from them. the more you strive for, the more you achieve. so hughes wrote this preaching the point of not allowing you to forget or give up on your hopes and dreams in life.

I think that this poem is basically saying that when dreams do come to us, they either make a big impact that can be somehting great. Or the dreams that come at you when youre not ready and change something for the bad. Some of this as well has to do with the way that yourself is believing in it.

IN RESPONSE TO QUESTION

the poem is asking but one thing:
- what happens to a dream that is not fulfilled ? -

the poem is but wondering if a dream is not fulfilled
what happens to the dreamer and his dream?
does the dreamer give up on life?
or does the dream still push the dreamer to strive to survive ?
does the dreamer, despite not completing the dream, continue on to bigger and better dreams?
or, is the dream the dreamer’s demise?

everyone is different
only time can tell for each of us
if our dreams will lead us to crust and sugar over with success or make us explode with frustration and anger … only time and our decisions …

It is saying if you don’t chase your dreams, they will die and you won’t be able to go back in time and achieve them.

I think that Langston Hughes is saying that dreams left undone with stay undone. That if you don’t go for your dreams they will dry up and eventually die away. So basically he is saying go for your dreams and don’t just left them undone cause nothing good will come from it. Go in what you believe in and don’t let them dry out like a “raisin in the sun”. After awhile of leaving them you wont even care or try to pursue them. You would almost for get about them or that you ever had them.

this is saying that either a dream can stop being your dream and just fade away, it can be bugging you and cause irritation like a dream that you dont try to achieve, it can be something that you will never achieve and just forget about, a dream can become better and that you add to it and “add a sugary layer” and improve your dream as time goes on, it can be a disturbance or an annoyance by you that just hovers over you that you completely ignore, or a dream can be completely destroyed and lost. Basically this poem is saying that you should strive to achieve your dreams and not put them off. If you just ignore your dreams you wont take any steps forward in life and your dream can be bothersome to you.

The poem is talking about dreams that we do nothing with or dreams that we do not follow. It is asking about our dreams and when we do not pursue them. They can turn into something negative, positive, drag us down or we can forget all about them.

I think that Langston Hughes was trying to say that everyone has dreams, but not all dreams turn into reality. It is in our contol what we do with our dreams. We can make them into something if we try. You shouldn’t put your dreams aside if it’s something you are really passionate about. Just go for it, live with no regrets.

i think it is kind of saying that dreams come and go and if you dont really go for it and make it come ture, its not going to. Everyone has different dreams they arent all going to be the same and they can be huge dreams like trying to become presadent of the US or a smaller dream like “wishing” you were passing your classes….

Langston Hughes is showing how a dream left alone will cause more problems. He uses methphors to show how dramatic leaving a dream in the dust cause internal conflict towards yourself or to others depending on the dream and who it obtains to. When reading this poem you’re able to picture someone pondering about how something could have been and its holding them back from being thierselfs. Thats just what I picture. People carry dreams all their lives. Peoples dream can cause conflict depending on what they’re willing to do to reach their dream. The last line “or does it explode?” makes me think about how some dreams are just not going to happen or never will, but anything is possible…….

Langston is talking about our view on goals and dreams. If we want to do something how do we feel about while we are trying to pursue it. If our goal or dream doesn’t come true, what will we do after and what will we do during. How will we react to the let down and how will we work through it and achieve our next goal or dream.

i think that what he is saying is a person who gives up on their dream becomes a person who is useless and have nothing to strive for in their lives.

I believe the poem is saying that if we leave our dreams without pursuit, then they will become nothing and leave our lives emty or have a negative effect on us.

It’s stating that your dreams change who you are whether you like it or not. You can either embrace it or let it go. Either way, it’s going to affect your life whether it be positive or negative. It’s like pain. You can embrace it and overcome it, or let it overwhelm you and take you over.

This poem is about what happens to the dreams that people have but don’t pursue. It’s saying that if you don’t fulfill your dreams they will stay on your concious, weighing you down and eventually come back to you. It’s saying that not fulfilling your dreams just causes lots of more problems. The poem is saying that if you lose appreciation for your dreams and leave them alone without doing anything about them they will just continue to rot away and wear down more and more.

I think Hughes is trying to figure out what happens if you let a dream sit for to long without doing anything about it. He wants to know a if a dream dries up or goes bad somehow. If left too long, the result seems to be just additional problems. This is like in Act1, Scene1 and Walter has dream of a liquor store, but mainly just money. Basically, the entire Younger fmily seems to have unfulfilled dreams. I think the plant that Mama is trying to grow is a symbol of these dreams, and I have a feeling that it will grow more and more throughout the play.

I believe the poem is questioning what becomes of dreams. It asks us, do dreams come true, or do they simply turn into pitiful hopes that are lost as the years progress. Do they turn into wonderful blessings, or just the reminders of what we once wanted that was never provided?

I think that he is trying to figure out what happens to your dream when something gets in the way. Its almost like he doesn’t know but really wants to know.

The first act of A Raisin In The Sun is about the Younger family’s dreams of what they want in life. This poem talks about someones dreams that are like a raisin in the sun, or it will never happen. I belive langston is trying to show that the people in Harlem have dreams but they will most likely never happen. In this book I think it will be about the Younger familys dreams (mostly Bennie and Waltor Lee’s) and how they will overcome the odds and actually accomplish them. Or this book could will show the difficulty of a black family trying to accomplish there dreams but the white people squash there dreams. Either way i can see this book is going to be about hopes and dreams of the younger family and how hard it is for them, being black and poor.

The peom talks about what happens to your dreams that fail. Do they become a dry hollow shell of when the were lushes plump suculent grapes. Or do they grow and then fail or dissapear. Are they a pain? Are they two big to carry. Or are they sugar coated dreams. These are the types of things he is talkng about. These are what can happen to dreams when they face barriers. They prolonge them for to long and they then become to are to big to bear.

Or do they EXPLODE into beautiful into nothing, or becme great displays of success? This is what I think the poem is asking.

He is saying that it is not enough just to have dreams. You have to go after them and so something about them. If you dont, your window of opportunity will close and your dreams will shrivel up and wont be achievable.

i think the poem is just describing the diferent aspects of how when a dream is changed or you cant have your dream what happens to it or mabey all of those things are expressed when you know you cant have your dream or just some but they are all good interpritations of what hapens to a dream does it wither up or dry out does it hang with you or possible does it make you go crazy.

What happens when you have to wait to fulfill your dreams?

Do they go away forever?

Do they change and then leave?

Do they stink up the rest of your life?

Do they become more ambitious than beore?

Does it slow you down and then screw everything else up in a large explosion?

I think that Langston Hughes is talking about what could happen and how you could feel if you don’t follow or don’t persue your dreams. I think that he is questioning weather or not your dreams can “go bad” or go away if you let them sit and don’t try to presue them. I think that if you want something to happen or if you have a dream and just can’t try to presue it for a while, I don’t believe it would go away. I think that Walter’s dream of a liquor store shows this. He doesn’t have the money to start the store right now, but because of this I don’t think that his dream will go away.

Langston is trying to say if you let a dream sit it will be gone before you know it. also if you let someone else kill your dreams you may never be able to retrieve them if they are lost.

this is talking about achieving your dream and choosing what you want in life, people wont just hand you your dream, you have to strive for it and take it, cause as soon as you let it go and start takeing shortcuts then you wont achieve it, and you should do everything you can to achieve in it, because when you get older you dont want to be one of those people that said i wish i did this, if i had did this then i would of complete my dream….no you should do everything you can now and be happy later.

This poem is describing the effects of what happens to a dream that is left aside. The poem asks about all the different things that can happen to dreams people have that aren’t pursued.

He is talking about how if dreams are not pursued then maybe they will never come to be–they will just explode into nothingness and stuff because if you don’t pursue your dreams it cannot be expected that they will come true… and i believe that his raisin analogy kind of applies to how sometimes people’s happiness just shrivels up like a grape to a raisin because they do not pursue their dreams and end up doing something that they do not truly enjoy. It is talking about all of the possibilities that may be if somebody does not pursue their dreams and saying it in an abstract way and stuff i think.

he is saying that a dream not pursued is a dream lost. the dream will stink like meat and explode. it sounds rediculous but thats what you will feel like if you go through your life just expecting your dreams to happen. you have to fight for your dreams and there is no guarantee that you will ever get there. weather we acomplish are dreams is partly up to us. i say partly because we do not always have control of what happens in are life. i know this is corny but it is a perfect example. In the movie “Its a wonderfull life” the main charactor has big dreams and oppertunits that come up in his life. but instead of doing that he stays in his home town and helps the people acheve there own dreams and in the end he relizes that his dream was to help other acomplish theres. ( its a great movie if you havent seen it)
